SHOPPERS can save up to $1,500 a year off their supermarket bill just by using coupons, a STAR report shows.

Coupon specialist Susan Samtur of Yonkers, New York, took THE STAR along on one market trip where she save $100 by cashing in on the coupon goldmine.

This week Susan has agreed to let readers in on the refund secret. "First, you should know the three types of refunds," she told THE STAR.

Coupons: In exchange for a completed form and proof of purchase, the manufacturer will send the consumer a coupon for "cents off" or for the acquisition of a FREE product. Cash Refund: In exchange for a --------- the amount specified in the offer.

Premium: In exchange for a completed form and proof of purchase, the manufacturer will send the consumer a gift, specified in the offer.

Now Susan offers these tips to take advantage of incredible, money-saving offers:

Subscribe to one of some 40 refunding publications distributed across the country.

Read the daily newspapers. The best days for clipping refund offers are Wednesdays and Sundays.

Save labels, boxes, wrappers, ------------ etc. These either carry forms to be filled out, or they may be used as proofs of purchase, also known as qualifiers.

Watch for coupons which offer the highest value 75 cents off over seven cents.

Shop in stores which offer double value for your coupon. This means that a 50-cent coupon is actually worth $1.00.

Buy in bulk when possible.

If the offer does not specify the size of the product, select the smallest size so that you can use more coupons.
